Patch

Smoother graphics on older PCs

Added

  • Graphics are picked for your PC. On first launch the game checks your graphics chip and chooses Low, Medium or High for you. Settings shows Auto with what it detected, and you can still pick a preset yourself. If you were on High and your PC looks better suited to a lower preset, the game offers to switch once.
  • FPS meter. Press F7 (or turn it on in Settings > Interface) to see your frame rate and the 1% low in the corner of the screen.
  • Frame rate limit. Settings > Graphics can cap the frame rate at 30, 60, 120 or 144 fps. New players start at 60, which keeps laptops cooler and quieter. Existing players stay uncapped until they choose a limit.
  • A clear message when your browser can't run the game, with steps to fix it, instead of a crash when entering the world.

Changed

  • Graphics are prepared on the loading screen. The loading screen now stays up until the game has finished preparing its graphics, so you are not clicking a world that is not ready yet, and spells, effects, buildings and dungeons no longer stutter the first time you see them.
  • Fewer hitches. Changing the graphics preset no longer freezes the game, turning the camera through forests is smoother, and far-away or off-screen characters cost less to draw.
  • Automatic quality drops stick. When the game lowers graphics because the frame rate is low, it now stays lowered instead of resetting, Settings shows it with a Restore button, and it can step back up once things run smoothly again. Picking a preset yourself always wins.
  • Less work in the background. The game drops to a low frame rate while its window is hidden, minimised or in the background, saving power and heat.
  • Medium shows fewer lamp lights at night to keep older PCs smooth. Turning shadows on or off and the number of lamp lights now apply after a restart.
