Patch

The Horseman Unhorsed

Fixes and changes from the first nights of Halloween.

The Headless Horseman

  • At half health the Horseman is thrown from the saddle. His horse bolts into the mist, and he gets up and fights on foot to the end.
  • On foot he can be tanked: he walks up to whoever holds his attention and stays on them. His blows land harder, and he has two new scythe attacks, the Headsman's Chop (step aside or block) and the Scything Sweep (jump it, step back or block).
  • While mounted, he stumbles after his charges, rides and spins and stands still for a few seconds. Get in close: melee hits land 50% harder while he's staggered.
  • He now fights every player at their own level. High-level players no longer shrug off his blows or out-damage everyone just by being high level.
  • A group of three should bring him down in about eight to ten minutes.
  • The fight has four phases, at 75%, 50% and 25% health, and the boss bar marks all of them.
  • New rare drop: the Horseman's Scythe, a two-handed halberd with the numbers of a Steel Halberd. Each player who earns the kill reward has a 1 in 20 chance of finding it where he falls. It can be traded.

Event news

  • When anyone finds a Jack-o'-Lantern Headpiece, a Straw Scarecrow Hat or the Horseman's Scythe, the whole server sees it in chat, the Gazette lists it and the town criers call it out.
  • When the Horseman is slain, everyone sees who took part, in chat, in the Gazette and from the criers.
  • Earning a Harvest Token or an event hat tells you how many more you can find today, and you are told when you reach the day's limit.
  • The daily limits (40 Harvest Tokens, 3 Jack-o'-Lantern Headpieces and 3 Straw Scarecrow Hats) now reset once a real day, at midnight Mountain Time, instead of every couple of hours, and they are kept when you log out or the server restarts.
  • Event items have their own pink Event colour and label instead of showing as bronze.
  • If you have turned off Appear in the Gazette, announcements show you as "a traveller".

Bounties

  • Bounty now has seven masters. The Lampwardens give contracts from the start, and new masters open as your Bounty level grows: Osric Dunn in Stonebrook (10), Nell Haskett at Gull's Rest (20), Tamsin Reed in Greenwatch (30), Idris Vantor in Sunhaven (40), Brother Anselm Vey at Windbell Abbey (55) and Maeve Corrow in Lastlamp (75). Talk to any master you have unlocked to take a contract.
  • Contracts follow your Bounty level, and each master asks for more than the last.
  • Sometimes a master names a target: a pack and its leader, such as a camp's bandits and the one who runs them.
  • Masters also hand out dungeon contracts: clear a dungeon to fill one. Each dungeon opens as a contract at its own Bounty level, and a party clear counts for everyone in the run who holds it.
  • The Bounty skill's unlock list shows every master and every dungeon contract.
  • Rerolling a contract now costs more as your Bounty level grows.
  • Rare monsters come back after a random 5 to 10 minutes.

Travel

  • Home Recall is free, with a 30 minute cooldown shared with fast travel from the world map.
  • Travel from beside a Lamp-stone has its own 30 second cooldown, so the two no longer hold each other up.
  • If you get stuck in deep water, you are set down on the nearest shore after a few seconds.

Patch notes

  • What's New keeps the latest big update at the top, with the patches since listed underneath. Big updates get a proper announcement when you log in; patches only show a quiet note.
  • The website's patch notes show big updates as cards with their patches tucked underneath.

Performance

  • Smoother frame rates across the open world, and much smoother around the Halloween fields. Far-off creatures are much cheaper to draw.
  • Fewer stutters when new characters come into view, like walking into a town or talking to someone.
  • The detailed FPS meter (press F7 twice, or Settings > Detailed FPS meter) shows how many creatures are nearby and where each frame's time goes. A bug report sent while it's on includes its last 30 seconds.

Fixes

  • Nameplates and chat bubbles sit over a mounted rider's head on every mount, and chat bubbles sit closer to your head when you're on foot.
  • An agility course's finish card shows the same time the leaderboards keep.
  • The target frame no longer blinks green and red when you target yourself while regenerating health.
  • Holding left and right mouse to run forward now works in mouse-look (hold both for a quarter of a second).
  • Quest arrows and trackers no longer show internal names like jewelers_bench.
  • Mithril is now spelled Mythril everywhere.
