Major update

Controllers and Phones

You can now play Whispered Scrolls with a controller, or on your phone or tablet. Both are experimental. They're a solid start, but there's plenty left to refine, and we'll keep improving each one based on what you tell us. If something feels awkward, confusing or just wrong, please send it through Feedback / Report a bug in the game, or tell us in Discord. Your reports shape what we fix next, and they matter a great deal to us.

  • Controller support. Plug in an Xbox, PlayStation or Steam Deck controller and the game switches over as soon as you press a button. Every prompt shows your controller's own buttons, PlayStation symbols included.
  • Everything within reach. Press Start for a menu with Character, Social and Game tabs, so every window in the game is a few presses away. Hold View to move around the HUD itself, and every window shows its buttons along the bottom.
  • A cross hotbar. Hold LB or RB and press a face button or the d-pad to use that slot. Both bars stay in place, and Assign to bar puts an ability, food, potion or weapon on exactly the button you press.
  • Made for a controller. Y opens your satchel and holding it calls your mount. Press in the right stick to step the camera out, or hold it in while you push the stick up or down to zoom smoothly. Tap d-pad Right to auto-run. The map moves with the sticks and zooms with the triggers. Hold d-pad Right for emotes and quick chat. Healing spells cast on yourself when you aren't aiming at a friend (you can turn this off), and aim assist helps a little against creatures, never against players.
  • Play on your phone. Move with your left thumb, look with your right, and use labelled buttons to attack, block, dodge, jump and heal, with your abilities arranged around them. Pinch or use the zoom buttons to change the camera.
  • Windows made for touch. Windows open as sheets sized for a phone, and you tap an item for its options. The title, character screens and conversations all fit a phone held sideways.
  • Loot that waits for you. On a controller or a phone, loot no longer pops open in the middle of a fight. A small loot marker appears instead, and you open it when you're ready.
  • Pick your layout. Choose Standard, Compact or Left-handed in Settings, and set the button size and opacity.
  • Phones load more reliably. The game uses far less memory while the world loads, so phones that used to close the game partway through loading should now get in. If a phone still struggles, the game lowers its settings for the next load on its own.
  • Back where you were. If your connection drops for a moment, you rejoin right where you were instead of loading in again.
