Old-School Progression, Modern Combat

The skill grind of the classic browser MMOs, rebuilt as a real-time action game.

Skill-Based Action Combat

There's no tab targeting. Aim every block, arrow, spell, and strike.

A knight in dark plate with a greatsword and a tall shield facing a Giant Spider, its charge marked by a glowing red lane across the path.
A Giant Spider's charge, painted on the ground before it lands.
  1. Read the wind-upCreatures wind up before they strike, and the hit lands when the wind-up ends. Bigger attacks mark the ground before they land.
  2. Time your parryRaise your guard just as a blow lands and you take nothing. The attacker staggers, and your next hit lands harder.
  3. Roll and jumpA roll slips through blows. Jump clear of slams, shockwaves and low sweeps, and swing in the air to plunge down on landing.
  4. Round, kite or towerBigger shields cover more of you but slow you down and cut your damage. Purple-gold telegraphs can't be blocked at all.

Five combat skills and 21 weapon types

There are no classes. The weapon in your hand decides the skill you train, and you can switch whenever you like. Every weapon type has its own trait and four abilities. An axe's combo finisher opens a bleed, a mace ignores 30% of armour, a dagger crits more from behind, and a longbow hits harder the farther the shot. Each weapon keeps its own hotbar, and one character can train all five combat skills.

The story

The seventh Scroll is still missing

Hear the Whispers, follow the shards across Aethermere and reach them before the Hushed do.

166 quests, and some of them play out like small mysteries. In A Hush in the Hollow, Hearthmoor's lamps go dark at midnight. You question the neighbours, steep a cloth that swallowed a voice and name the culprit, then decide whether she gets your mercy or the watch.

Pinned up in Hearthmoor

Strong backs wanted. No geese.

These are pinned up on the Hearthmoor board right now, and yes, one of them is about a goose.

See the board in game
  • The Delvers' Hall on Tinker's Rise records every party going underground. Sign the ledger going in. Sign it again coming out, if you can.
  • Carters wanted: the Wagon Yard outside the Carters' Gate wants strong backs and sound knees. Apply to Cartmaster Axle. No geese.
  • Rats: the Ryefields outside the Mere Gate are overrun. Bertram Oake offers breakfast and a theory. Inquire at the Mere Gate.
  • Lost: one goose, answers to Your Honour. Do not approach. Last seen at the Exchange. Reward: the honour.
The in-game parchment map of Aethermere: an island of coloured regions from Thornwood and Ironcrest in the north to the Wickstrand Coast and the Salt Sisters in the south, with towns and lamp-stones marked.

The world

Aethermere Is Open

Thornwood. Saltmire. The Sunscar Dunes. Hollow Barrow. Cinderhold. The Veilspire.

  • 6.4 km across. You start at the harbour in Wickhaven and head north through moors, badlands, dunes, deep forests and mountains.
  • 20 towns and outposts. Each one has a bank, an inn and a Lamp-stone for fast travel, and when you fall you wake at the nearest stone you have touched. Smiths gather at the furnaces in Stonebrook, tailors at the looms in Silverford, and traders at the Exchange in Hearthmoor.
  • 21 dungeons. Instanced delves for up to five players, levels 4 to 99, each with its own bosses.

After dark

Then the stars come out

Watch the sun sink over the moors and the stars fill the sky above the peaks. Then head for the nearest lamp-stone, or keep going into the dark.
